1. A species of wild banana from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been recorded to have a frond of about 4.2 m, making it the longest frond recorded in bananas worldwide. A frond is a cluster or group of fruits arranged along a central axis or stem.

2.  In Australia, Sussan Ley has been appointed leader of the Liberal Party, becoming the first woman to lead the federal party in its 80-year history. She defeated her rival Angus Taylor in a tight party room vote and became Australia's first female opposition leader.

3.  The UN Global Road Safety Week is being observed from 12 to 18 May 2025, with the themes #MakeWalkingSafe and #MakeCyclingSafe. The World Health Organization and UN partners aim to reduce road traffic accidents by improving infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists around the world.

4.  Bhuvan Ribhu, who proved to be a milestone in global recognition for child advocacy, was awarded the Medal of Honor by the World Jurist Association at the 2025 World Law Congress. He is the first Indian lawyer to receive this honor.

5.  The Reserve Bank of India has announced a significant policy change to improve accountability in the digital lending sector. From May 13, 2025, all regulated financial institutions will have to report their digital lending apps on a centralised portal, CIMS. The move is a part of the updated 2025 Digital Lending Guidelines.

6.  The Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2021 published by the Registrar General of India shows that the total fertility rate in India has remained at 2.0 for the second consecutive year. Bihar has recorded the highest TFR of 3.0, while Delhi and West Bengal have the lowest TFR of 1.4.

7.  7. India is set to enhance its surveillance capabilities with the launch of the EOS-09 satellite on May 18, 2025. The satellite will be launched using a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from the Sriharikota Space Center. It is equipped with a C-band synthetic aperture radar. This radar allows high-resolution imaging regardless of weather conditions.

8.  8. President Donald Trump announced initiatives aimed at lowering the prices of prescription drugs in the United States. The move revives efforts from his first term, which focused on a policy known as “most favored nation” (MFN). The executive order promises to cut drug prices by up to 80%.

9. 9.  India's retail inflation eased further in April 2025, its lowest level in nearly six years. According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the Consumer Price Index-based inflation stood at 3.16% in April, lower than 3.34% in March 2025 and much lower than the 4.83% recorded in April 2024.

10.   Public sector Canara Bank and Union Bank of India announced special products to boost resource mobilisation. Under the scheme, Union Bank will offer 6.75 per cent interest on 375-day deposits, with a minimum deposit amount of ₹10 lakh and up to ₹3 crore. The scheme includes a 375-day super top-up health insurance cover with a sum insured of ₹5 lakh along with cashless hospitalisation facility.

सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के केनरा बैंक और यूनियन बैंक ऑफ इंडिया ने संसाधन जुटाने को बढ़ावा देने के लिए विशेष उत्पादों की घोषणा की। इस योजना के तहत, यूनियन बैंक 375 दिनों की जमाराशि पर 6.75 प्रतिशत ब्याज देगा, न्यूनतम जमाराशि ₹10 लाख से लेकर ₹3 करोड़ तक। इस योजना में 375 दिन का सुपर टॉप-अप स्वास्थ्य बीमा कवर शामिल है, जिसमें कैशलेस अस्पताल में भर्ती होने की सुविधा के साथ ₹5 लाख की बीमा राशि दी जाती है।
