RRB Group D Cut-Off: Detailed Analysis (2018-19 to 2022)

Swati Mahendra's

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts the Group D exams to recruit candidates for various positions across the Indian Railways. Understanding cut-off trends from previous years is vital for aspirants aiming to secure a place. Cut-offs help identify competition levels, set benchmarks, and guide preparation strategies.

This blog provides a comprehensive year-wise and region-wise cut-off analysis for RRB Group D, focusing on UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PWD, and Ex-Servicemen categories. Let’s dive into the details!

What are RRB Group D Cut-Offs?

RRB Group D cut-offs are the minimum qualifying marks that candidates must secure to clear the exam and qualify for the next stage, which includes the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and document verification. The cut-offs are determined based on several factors, including:

  • The number of vacancies in the region.
  • The difficulty level of the exam.
  • The total number of applicants.
  • The category-wise reservation policy.

Understanding these trends helps aspirants plan effectively and aim for realistic goals.

Note: The above table highlights key regions and categories. Additional data can be added for other regions such as Bengaluru, Ranchi, Bhopal, and Guwahati.

Key Trends in RRB Group D Cut-Offs

  1. Steep Rise in Cut-Off Marks (2022):
    • The UR category cut-off saw a significant jump across most regions, such as:
      • Ajmer: 73.73 (2018) → 97.45 (2022)
      • Allahabad: 74.57 (2018) → 98.00 (2022)
  2. Regional Variations:
    • Kolkata region recorded one of the highest cut-offs in 2018 for the UR category at 80.57, while Bengaluru had one of the lowest cut-offs at 62.01.
    • In 2022, the Allahabad region had the highest UR cut-off at 98.00.
  3. Introduction of EWS Category:
    • The 2022 exam introduced a separate cut-off for the EWS (Economically Weaker Section), adding more competition within the general quota.
  4. Importance of Normalization:
    • The Railway Board uses a normalization process to account for variations in question paper difficulty across shifts, significantly impacting cut-off determination.

Factors Influencing RRB Group D Cut-Offs

  1. Vacancies and Applications: Higher the number of vacancies, relatively lower the cut-off (though competition often neutralizes this effect).
  2. Exam Difficulty: More difficult exams often see slightly lower cut-offs due to the normalization process.
  3. Category-Wise Reservations: OBC, SC, ST, and PWD categories often have relatively lower cut-offs than the UR category.

Preparation Tips to Beat the Cut-Off

  1. Set Realistic Benchmarks:
    • Aim for at least 10-15 marks above the previous year’s cut-off for your region and category to stay competitive.
  2. Focus on High-Scoring Topics:
    • Mathematics: Simplification, Time & Work, Percentage, Profit & Loss.
    • General Intelligence & Reasoning: Coding-Decoding, Puzzles, Blood Relations.
    • General Science: Basic Physics, Chemistry, Biology concepts.
    • Current Affairs: Stay updated with railway-related news, policies, and general events.
  3. Practice Mock Tests:
    • Attempt at least 3-4 full-length mocks weekly and analyze your performance to identify weak areas.
  4. Time Management:
    • Work on speed and accuracy simultaneously. Manage time wisely during the exam to avoid leaving questions unanswered.
  5. Regular Revision:
    • Consistently revise key formulas, reasoning tricks, and scientific concepts.
