Kerala BJP leader new vice chairperson of minorities' panel

George Kurian, a BJP leader and 'social and educational activist' from Kerala, has been appointed as the vice chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM).

The appointment was made by Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs (Independent Charge) Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The Centre had on May 24 nominated five NCM members, including Kurian, to the Commission's vice chairperson post, which had been lying vacant for over two months.

Defence Minister's Scientific Adviser Satheesh Reddy's Tenure Extended

The government has extended the tenure of G Satheesh Reddy, scientific adviser to the defence minister, by one year. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved extension of his tenure for one year with effect from June 4.

Mr Reddy, a scientist, was in May 2015 appointed to the post for a fixed two-year term.

Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega dies

Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, died at age 83.

Noriega served a 17-year drug sentence in the United States and was later sent to face charges in France. He spent all but the last few months of his final years in a Panamanian prison for murder of political opponents during his 1983-89 regime.

                                                 

पनामा के पूर्व तानाशाह मैनुएल नोरिएगा का निधन

पनामा के पूर्व तानाशाह मैनुएल नोरिएगा का निधन हो गया है। वह 83 साल के थे।

नोरिएगा ने ड्रग के मामले में अमेरिका में 17 साल की सजा काटी और फिर फ्रांस में आरोपों का सामना किया।अपने जीवन के आखिरी समय में वह पनामा की जेल में रहे। साल 1983 से 1989 तक के शासनकाल में उन पर अपने राजनीतिक विरोधियों की हत्या करने का आरोप था।

Swedish satire 'The Square' wins Cannes top prize Palme d'Or

Ruben Ostlund's darkly comic "The Square", a satire on the contemporary art world and what it reveals about modern society, took home the Palme d'Or as the Cannes Film Festival rounded off its highlights-studded 70th edition. 

"The Square" is the first Swedish film to win the coveted prize in 66 years. Ostlund is only the second Swedish director after Alf Sjoberg to win the Palme d'Or. Sjoberg won in 1951 for a screen adaptation of the August Strindberg play "Miss Julie".
