1. The Khelo India University Games 2025 will be held in Jaipur,
Rajasthan in November. This year, more than 4,000 athletes from over 200
universities are expected to participate, competing in 20 disciplines. The
University Games are for under-25 athletes and will be held after the under-18
Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Bihar in May 2025.
2. The brilliant former
opener Shikhar Dhawan has penned his autobiography in which he has opened up
about everything from his relationships to friendships to all the controversies
surrounding him, be it off the field or on the field. Name of the book:
"The One: Cricket, My Life and More" Published by Harper Collins.
Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on August 24,
2024.
3. All NATO members have agreed to increase defence and security
spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. In a declaration at the NATO summit in The
Hague, leaders said the defence pledge would include investing at least 3.5 per
cent of GDP per year in core defence needs. They also vowed to spend up to 1.5
per cent of GDP on security-related expenditure.
4. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has increased
the auto settlement limit for advance claims from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in 3
days. The EPF auto-settlement facility was introduced during Covid-19 to enable
quick disbursement of EPF advances. It helps subscribers get money quickly for
medical treatment, marriage, housing or education.
5. To tackle the rise in digital payment frauds, major Indian
banks are collaborating with the RBI to develop the Digital Payments
Intelligence Platform (DPIP).This digital public infrastructure aims to enhance
fraud risk management by sharing real-time intelligence, thereby preventing
fraudulent transactions.
6. Kerala has become the first state of India to get its butterfly
sanctuary. The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary in Kannur district has been officially
renamed as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, a first of its kind move in the
country. Spread across 55 sq km in the lush Western Ghats, the sanctuary now serves
as a dedicated haven for over 266 butterfly species, including several rare and
endangered ones.
7. Bangladesh will celebrate August 8 as New Bangladesh Day, marking
the anniversary of the swearing-in of the interim government led by Nobel
laureate Muhammad Yunus , which followed a student-led uprising. The government
has also declared August 5 as July Uprising Day.
8. The Gujarat Information
Commission (GIC) has ruled that private universities fall under the ambit of
the Right to Information (RTI) Act as they are 'public authorities'. In its
order dated June 16, the commission asked the state government to issue
directions to ensure that all universities established under the Gujarat
Private Universities Act, 2009, implement the provisions of the RTI Act.
9. India's flagship biodiversity
event, the Indian Conservation Conference (ICCON) 2025, is scheduled to be held
from June 25 to 27 at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in Dehradun.
Organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC),
the event aims to bring together over 500 participants.
10. India is going to set up
its first quantum computing valley in Amaravati by January 2026, a visionary
initiative driven by the Andhra Pradesh government in conjunction with the
National Quantum Mission. This tech park will empower sectors such as
pharmaceuticals, it was told during a workshop in Vijayawada.
11. State Bank of India is set to raise upto ₹25,000
crore through a QIP, its first since 2017,with the aim of increasing its CET-1 capital
ratio from the current 11%. Six investment banks, including Kotak and Morgan Stanley,
will manage the issue, which is likely to be India's largest QIP ever.
