The district administration has taken all necessary measures to tackle imminent floods this monsoon season, but Pilibhit still remains vulnerable mainly due to heavy discharge of waters across the border from Nepal. This influx also affects Lakhimpur-Kheri and Sitapur districts.
The district of Pilibhit is surrounded by two major rivers — Sharda and Devha — apart from Kailash, Khakra and Apsara rivers. Almost every year, the deluge of Sharda and Devha affects hundreds of people around 72 villages of the district and render many people homeless.
The discharge of water from Nepal makes the situation all the more precarious. Water flowing from Nepal merges into Sharda through the Bamni river which carries water from five Nepali rivers, namely Radha, Patharia, Syali, Sunvara and Vanara. The collective discharge of water from all these rivers intensifies water current in Sharda to devastating levels leading to floods.
The administration has set up 34 flood relief camps in the district out of which 15 have been set up in Puranpur tehsil area, 12 camps in Bisalpur and seven camps in Pilibhit tehsil area. These camps will provide with shelter, food and medical assistance to the flood affected people. The most severely affected area falls between NaujalhaNakta to Ramnagra, which is in the close proximity of the downstream of Sharda river.
