1 India has launched its first fully indigenous hydrogen fuel cell
passenger vessel, which began commercial operations from Namo Ghat in Varanasi.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the vessel. The vessel's maiden
commercial voyage was from Namo Ghat to Lalita Ghat, a distance of 5
kilometers. It is India's first passenger vessel to demonstrate hydrogen fuel
cell propulsion.

2 The 20th Conference of
the Parties (CoP20) to CITES concluded in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, marking the
50th anniversary of the convention. CITES (Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is a global agreement between
governments to ensure that international wildlife trade does not endanger
species survival. The convention opened for signature in 1973 and CITES entered
into force on 1 July 1975.

3 Senior Congress leader
and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 90 at
his residence 'Deoghar' in Latur, Maharashtra. He held key positions as Union
Home Minister (2004-2008), Lok Sabha Speaker (1991-1996), Governor of Punjab
and Administrator of Chandigarh (2010-2015). He started his public life as the
head of the Latur Municipal Council.

5. India's
nuclear energy sector is poised for a major transformation. The Union Cabinet
has approved the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025 (Peace). This landmark bill will
allow private companies to invest in nuclear power. This move is crucial for
India to achieve its ambitious target of 100 gigawatts of nuclear power
capacity by 2047. The Nuclear Energy Mission, launched in the Union Budget
2025-26, aims to focus on research and development (R&D) of small modular
reactors (SMRs). India aims to develop at least five indigenously designed and
operated SMRs by 2033.

6. The central government has approved a name change for the MGNREGA,
renaming India's flagship rural employment scheme the Pujya Bapu Grameen Rozgar
Guarantee Yojana. The government has increased the number of minimum guaranteed
employment days under the scheme to 125 days. Furthermore, the minimum wage has
been revised to ₹240 per day. The scheme was originally launched as the
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in 2005. It was later renamed
the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

8. A new
regulatory framework has been announced to end the decades-old pagdi system in
Mumbai's housing system. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the
move aims to resolve long-standing disputes, provide legal clarity for tenants
and landlords, and accelerate the redevelopment of old and dilapidated
buildings in the city. Tenants pay a large one-time premium (pagdi) to the
landlord. In return, they receive almost permanent occupancy. The monthly rent
is very low and does not increase for years.
